Job Description: Under general direction, using outlines and practices, independently carries out development, design, construction, and repair of precision, specialized, and complex equipment, instrumentation, and systems used for teaching and research. This position requires expertise in the field of electronic engineering, combined with extensive knowledge of the instrumentation used for chemical research. It requires carrying out complex and precision tasks which require comprehensive technical knowledge, skills, and capabilities in the design and development of rare equipment. Provides consultation services to faculty, research personnel, graduate students and other technical support groups regarding the design of experimental equipment, instrumentation and systems, including feasibility studies and suggestions for alternative approaches to problems. Routinely provides repair and consulting services for non-departmental customers across the campus. Job Responsibilities: Surface analysis instrumentation such as XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscope), SAM (scanning AUGER microprobe), Secondary-Ion Ultrahigh vacuum generation and control Has expertise in maintenance and repair of at least five of the major families of instrumentation used in Chemistry: Carries out related duties as necessary, in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of the job. Liquid and gas chromatography equipment Scintillation (radiation measurement) equipment Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometers Electron Spin Resonance Spectrometers Particle Accelerator / Decelerators Mass Spectrometers (including all common sources and detectors) Provides training to other technicians within the group, providing sustained guidance over time, as required to provide effective training. Assists in maintenance of the technical reference library and instrumentation manuals, and in maintaining the shop parts inventory. Laser systems and associated electro-optical and triggering systems Job Requirements: Graduation from a technical college or institute. Graduation from a 2-year technical program such as B.C.I.T. that specialises in electronic circuitry and instrumentation, plus a minimum of 10 years practical experience in scientific research work.7 years relevant experience. Ability to carry out independent design and developmental work associated with the field of engineering technology and the application of knowledge and non-routine techniques. Effective interpersonal and communication skills required, including the ability to work with senior UBC research staff with respect to equipment repair. Experience and demonstrated effectiveness in the design and servicing of circuits and systems found in chemical, biological, and physics research and teaching. Graduation from a technical college or institute or completion of a recognized apprenticeship and a minimum seven years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. May be required to supervise other technicians, checking their work for accuracy and completeness. Co-ordinates the work of others, including CUPE 116 staff outside of the electronics group. Gives technical advice to junior personnel and users of facilities.
