Job Description: The Strategic Communications Lead role sits within the Knowledge-to-Action (K2A) team in the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP), an interdisciplinary research institute based in the School of Population and Public Health in the Faculty of Medicine. The Strategic Communications Lead develops, manages and executes communications strategy and tactics for the HELP portfolio, with a goal of enhancing the image and reputation of HELP at the local, provincial and international level, and of supporting HELP’s strategic plan and organizational priorities. Job Responsibilities: Provide coaching to prepare faculty to speak with the media, and help develop key messages, as needed. Edit submitted content, ensuring it aligns with organizational strategic priorities and the HELP strategic plan. Work closely with Knowledge-to-Action team and HELP Graphic & Publication staff on graphic design, paid media and content marketing initiatives related to editorial and brand storytelling content. Keep apprised of current early child development events, policy, and news media coverage to inform media strategy and identify opportunities. Adjusts HELP calendar to accommodate HELP news of the day or other unexpected content. Ensure all media outreach ladders up to with HELP’s strategic plan and organizational priorities, helping to provide profile to plan, and HELP’s core values and principles. Provide content for HELP marketing and communications digital, social media and internal communications teams, and other unites/departments as requested. Work with Knowledge-to-Action Manager to source vendors for media training, develop training program and identify key faculty and staff who would benefit from formal training to best maximize media opportunities to the benefit of the institute. Editor of the HELP Newsletter, the HELP website and blogs, HELP reports and communications materials. Manage, report and analyze key performance indicators for media relations. Manage, report and analyze key KPI’s for content marketing and owned media. Report on web metrics, including traffic flow and readership numbers for editorial content. Identify key media relevant to portfolio. Initiate, develop, and maintain positive relationships with identified media. Manage content distribution to social or paid media platforms to increase web traffic. Develops and executes an annual editorial calendar for various channels of content, including written, video and audio. This includes website and newsletter content, media releases and relations, research profiles, academic research and content related to the HELP news and events. Ensure all editorial content ladders up to with HELP’s strategic plan and organizational priorities, helping to provide profile to the plan, and HELP’s core values and principles. Works with a wide breadth of stakeholders including HELP Director, faculty, and research centres to identify and source editorial content ideas. Use editorial judgement to triage incoming media requests and to advance story development in line with institutional priorities. Oversee the overall online publishing process for the HELP Newsletter and HELP website. Responsible for developing editorial strategy, and creating editorial content and/or assigning members of the staff, faculty and partners to develop content with the Editor’s oversight. Oversees and directs dissemination of reports, brochures etc. to ensure completeness, accuracy and consistency in content, create development, and production of communication needs. Develop and manage strategic communications plans for HELP, contributing to the development and leading the implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy that reaches key audiences and that builds on HELP’s profile as a leader in the area of child development research. In doing so increases the influence of HELP’s research activities and findings among national and international scholarly research organizations, government and non-profit organizations. Develop and/or oversee the development of media materials, including media releases, pitches, Q&A’s, media advisories, photography and videos. Respond to and redirect, as appropriate, enquiries from the media and the public. Job Requirements: Proven organizational skills; exceptional time management and problem-solving skills, as well as ability to manage multiple projects and timelines. Ability to lead by creating strategies and taking appropriate action to ensure acceptance and support. High level of enthusiasm, diplomacy and professionalism. Ability to digest complex information, including research studies and data, and translate them into engaging content for public consumption. Knowledge of University and HELP policies, goals, issues and mission is preferred. Demonstrated ability to write media relations and editorial content strategically designed to support institutional goas. Demonstrated editorial judgement with a keen sense of newsworthiness. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with an ability to impart complex information to audiences with mixed levels of understanding. Ability to mobilize teams and resources to ensure goals are met. Demonstrated ability in distilling complex scientific research into content accessible to different audiences Experience working with the media and developing and executing media relations campaigns. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to develop and implement strategic communication plans.
