Job Description: The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for operating and maintaining building equipment and infrastructure related to boilers, cooling towers, pumps, air compressors, geo-exchange and district energy system HVAC systems, controls, fire suppression systems and other related equipment to ensure the campus remains operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Job Responsibilities: Reports the need for inventory items requiring replenishing to the Charge Engineer. Enters work order status into work order system. Conduct rounds of building mechanical rooms and report abnormalities to the Charge Engineer. Inspect Boiler systems for safe operation and report abnormalities to the Charge Engineer. Work with required professional services or external contractors to assist in planning, designing and execution of complex system related contract work. Follow log book procedure as in accordance to the BC safety authority. Attend job related safety training. Conducts periodical fire hydrant flushing and testing. Responds to space temperature complaints. Minor cleaning of mechanical areas. Review daily log book to maintain communication continuity between shifts. Works in a team approach to assist in the safe operation and maintenance of the campus mechanical systems and supporting infrastructure. Purchasing of supplies and recording into excel tracking system. Conducts routine fire sprinkler system tests. Monitors and makes necessary adjustments to building automation systems. Responds to urgent University situations such as fire alarms, floods, leaks, power disruptions, etc. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Assists in collection of records of utility data such as meter readings. Complete systems operation and maintenance, essential to UBC operations, including: Conducts preventative maintenance of the specialized and highly technical district energy systems, geo-exchange systems, HVAC systems, boiler and chiller systems, air and vacuum compressors, and supporting infrastructure, requiring significant periods of concentration throughout the day. Monitor water quality in both open aquifer loop, district energy system heating and cooling systems and report anomalies or water quality concerns to the Manager, Operations & Utilities. Follow all safety procedures such as lock out, fall arrest, confined space entry, etc. Job Requirements: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent plus completion of trades training in Power engineering to journeyman status (4th class power Engineer). Over 6 years progressive related experience. Cross connection control certification an asset. Refrigeration experience an asset; gas fitting an asset. Building Automation Systems experience an asset. Basic computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required. Valid Class 5 Driver s License required. Ability to perform strenuous physical work and assume uncomfortable awkward positions. Required to lift up to 50lbs on a frequent basis. Must be able to work in areas which have higher levels of noise using proper hearing protection. Proven ability to operate hand and power tools and equipment, work in confined areas, withstand heights and/or long periods of bending, and working in extreme climate conditions on a continuous basis. Able to work flexible hours and or shifts and possibly weekends. This position is also required to share the responsibility of being on-call. Analytical thinking that incorporates creativity and innovation. Flexibility and comfort with change. Good customer service and communication skills are required. Must be a team player.
