Job Responsibilities:
- provide legal, business, and strategic advice on a wide range of litigation, regulatory and other legal matters to the various lines of business (LOBs) throughout the corporation and its affiliates and to senior executives
- play a key role in proactively managing risk through training and coaching, as well as through the creation and implementation of efficient contract governance processes
- provide support to the EVP and Chief Legal Officer as required
- draft legal pleadings and other legal documents to prosecute and defend claims by and against the company and to prosecute and defend applications at tribunals, including the Ontario Energy Board
- assist other members of Law Department
- manage litigation work performed by external counsel and act as the interface between external counsel and Hydro One LOBs
- negotiate, advise on, draft and/or review various types of commercial contracts as part of claims by and against the company and to advise other lawyers in the Law Department concerning such matters
- anticipate stakeholders’ needs and proactively develop solutions to meet them
- review and advise on legislation and regulations, as well as regulatory instruments issued by the Ontario Energy Board and other regulators
- anticipate and manage the legal risks connected with or resulting from the business strategy and operations
- participate in the functions and strategic plans of LOBs and provide training to LOBs to assist them in accomplishing corporate goals while managing risk
- mentor legal counsel, articling students and law clerks
Job Requirements:
- Ability to manage a busy schedule and multiple files at the same time
- Possess good knowledge of Word, SharePoint and Superior Court of Justice document management systems, and the ability to learn Hydro One document and records management systems
- Ability to work independently and as part of various teams
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- Show leadership and have excellent legal and business acumen and judgment
- Able to collaborate with other lines of business, including corporate functions (e.g. Regulatory Affairs, Finance, Risk Management and Insurance, Customer Care, Accounts Receivable, Real Estate and HR), to advise on litigation matters, claims, legal risks, business strategies and other issues related to the company’s businesses
- Ability to handle information and business affairs with secrecy and confidentiality as appropriate
- A minimum of five years of post-call experience as a litigation lawyer in a law firm or in-house legal department, including appearances in courts at the appellate level and lower
- Demonstrated aptitude for developing working relationships with a broad range of professionals and stakeholders at multiple levels
- Strong negotiating, drafting, communication and organizational skills as well as an excellent ability to convince people and be successful in court and at tribunals
- Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with broad, generalist responsibilities, but with specialist legal subject skills in litigation and in some regulatory matters
