Job Responsibilities:

  • Direct construction projects associated with remote communities diesel generating stations. Work with separate suppliers and contractors, as well as internal groups, to clarify Remotes’ requirements and standards, to reach a common agreement on design and specifications, and to resolve differences between plan and implementation. Meet with contractors at the field locations and deal with contract variations, substitutions, changes, etc. Review contractors’ proposals and cost quotations with respect to such work changes and where necessary, influence the contractor to take action suitable to the Remotes or to accept arrangements in Remotes’ best interest. Process invoices to ensure that Remotes has received services, make/or recommend adjustments for correction of defects and retain sufficient payment to ensure satisfactory conclusions.
  • Prepare instructional materials to ensure safe, efficient, and proper operation and maintenance of generating and auxiliary facilities. Assist maintenance authorities to solve chronic problems which are rooted in equipment application, improper procedures or inferior design.
  • Prepare implementation documents for projects, including request for release, detailed estimates, work orders, requisitions and work order closures.
  • Carry out or arrange for minor modifications. Troubleshoot abnormal/improper equipment performance, identify, locate and correct problems.
  • Execute project planning activities which includes preparation of site plans and related documents, planning estimates, schedules, resource coordination charts, environmental approval requirements, etc, which requires working with internal parties and external authorities such as the Indiginous Services Canada, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Environment, Conservation & Parks, etc to ensure that designs meet requirements of governing regulations.
  • Assist directly in field work in emergency situations or when work of an unusual highly technical nature is involved. Visit field locations and participate as necessary to restore to normal operation. Requires periodically assigning work, providing advice and guidance and checking work upon completion to personnel on loan during emergency situations or while attending to work of a highly technical nature.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Prepare engineering designs and specifications for construction of new or modifications to existing remote community power generating facilities, buildings, staff houses, and auxiliary equipment. Collaborate with maintenance and project groups in the investigation and development of ways to produce the best designs for the application. Promote the development of new standards as required.
  • Provide ongoing limited supervision to subordinate staff by assigning, checking and giving instructions and direction on work and problems as required. Prepare strategic planning activities of work unit.
  • Develop and maintain computerized information systems with respect to projects and plants, including schedules, expenditures, plant data, and estimating database. Coordinate and monitor the efforts of work unit, deal with controversial and/or engineering problems and expedite various phases of the work in order to meet project schedule.
  • Assign or carry out acceptance tests on plant equipment which requires investigating the operation and maintenance cost, temperature, pressure, vibration, mounting etc. Make recommendations to resolve problems which may involve working with and influencing outside manufacturers or suppliers to change designs or type of equipment in order to make the equipment acceptable for intended use. Job Requirements:

  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the successful completion of a four year university education in mechanical engineering and a minimum of ten years engineering work experience.
  • All appointees to MP4, MP5 and MP6 “Engineer” jobs will be required to possess a valid PEO license prior to the start date. Where Hydro One hires an employee into an “Engineer” job and the appointee does not currently hold a PEO license, but is licensed as a professional engineer in good standing from another Canadian engineering association/order, the appointee will not commence employment until such time that they can show proof that they have made application to the PEO in order to be deemed licensed in the province of Ontario.
  • Requires experience to become familiar with mechanical and electrical equipment for power production, engineering practices applicable to the tasks including diesel engines, fuel tank storage and control, heating and ventilation and auxiliary equipment.
  • Must be willing to spend the occasional night(s) away from home in the remote northern communities serviced by Hydro One Remotes.
  • Must be willing to fly on small aircraft on a regular basis
  • Requires an engineering knowledge of mechanical principles in order to prepare designs and specifications and to participate in the overall construction and modification programs relating to diesel generation facilities, buildings, fuel storage facilities and auxiliary systems in remote diesel generating stations.
  • As a bonafide occupational requirement, the successful incumbent must be able to fully satisfy Transport Canada’s Covid-19 mandate for flying on federally regulated aircrafts.
  • Requires experience such as may be gained in the contracting field, consulting field, and industry, in the areas of design and on-site evaluation of workmanship, to become familiar with controlling contracts and contracting, planning and estimating project activities.
