Job Description:

Positions allocable to this paired, entry-level Custody Records clerical class receive close administrative and technical supervision from a Supervising Custody Records Clerk, Sheriff.  Positions are located in the Inmate Reception Center.  Incumbents receive instruction, training, and gain the necessary experience assisting higher-level clerical staff in the processing of a variety of legal documents pertaining to inmates confined in a correctional institution to qualify for promotion to the journey-level class of Custody Records Clerk II, Sheriff.  Incumbents are required to work shift hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.  Commensurate with the concept of paired classes, incumbents in the Custody Records Clerk I, Sheriff classification is expected to gain the appropriate experience, based on instruction and training, to promote to the journey-level Custody Records Clerk II, Sheriff following the one-year training period.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Interprets, selects, and distributes short-term commitments for computation by Custody Records Clerk II’s, Sheriff.
  • Searches records and files for legal documents; teletypes and transmittals which requires interpreting legal documentation for processing bail and bond applications for inmate release from Sheriff’s custody.
  • Makes queries on computer terminals for information relating to inmate location and status.
  • Maintains clerical control of the workload involved in distributing bail, bond and fine applications
  • Answers questions and clarifies information for bail bondsmen, and personnel in other sections concerning such matters as inmate status, regulations, procedures, bail, bond, and fine applications.
  • Types and files a variety of documents including commitments, court releases, remand and legal removal orders, teletypes – and transmittals for purposes of processing inmates in and out of the Los Angeles County jail system.
  • Checks documents such as logs, remand and removal orders, teletypes, transmittals and commitments for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with rules, regulations and procedures governing inmate status and eligibility for release.
  • Locates and retrieves inmate record jackets from files for review by higher levels.
  • Receives instruction, training, and experience in the following activities in preparation for the higher level position of Custody Records Clerk II.
  • Prepares typewritten listings of inmates in custody.
  • Compares, reviews, and distributes legal documents, teletypes and special orders.

Job Requirements:

  • Physical Class II – Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.
  • One year specialized office clerical experience assisting higher-level clerical staff in the processing of a variety of legal documents in the Custody
  • Services Division of the Sheriff’s Department.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job related essential functions.
  • Ability to type at the rate of 30 net words per minute.
  • As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire.  The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait 12 months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

Qualification & Experience:

  • A qualifying performance typing test of 30 net words per minutes will be administered to candidates who have NOT held a typing position in the service of the County of Los Angeles.
  • Candidates who, in the service of the County of Los Angeles, currently hold or have held a typing position that meets the minimum typing skill requirement of the subject examination.
  • Candidates who have taken and passed a Los Angeles County typing performance test administered by a County Department that meets the minimum typing skills requirement of the subject examination.  Applicants MUST attach a copy of the typing certificate to their application.
