Job Description:

Reporting to the Senior Consultant Health & Safety Central Region, and acting as a trusted advisor to business partners, this role will lead the execution of Purolator’s health and safety program within an assigned geography and leads a team of H&S Staff.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that the legal register is maintained up to date.
  • Represent the Company escorting external official inspections (Provincial and Federal)
  • Develop and maintain / update technical H&S standards (Ensure alignment with legal requirements)
  • Participate / carry out local H&S inspections
  • Take ownership of the H&S strategy within the region in alignment with operations.
  • Actively promote a healthy workplace that is free from workplace violence and harassment
  • Run safety observation and intervention programs
  • Work collaboratively with the Environment, Health and Safety team, and with business partners, to drive an improvement in injury frequency.
  • Provide technical advise where required to solve H&S related problems.
  • Support Purolator’s return-to-work program
  • Educate, consult with and influence management regarding unique safety requirements impacting their decisions, business unit operations, systems and procedures
  • Provide H&S coaching to operations senior management (Director level and District Manager levels).
  • Facilitate and participate in Risk Assessment sessions
  • Facilitate the role out of the new H&S procedures and standards
  • Design H&S coaching programs for managers and front line workers and carry out Coach-the-Coach sessions for H&S coordinators and specialists.
  • Ensure that low severity / low potential incidents are investigated properly and corrective actions are carried out for closure and sustainability.
  • Carry out trend analysis for leading and lagging indicators within the region and design safety interventions to curb trends
  • Work with other disciplines (procurement, Facilities management etc…) to provide recommendations to ensure compliance with legal requirements regarding H&S regulations for facilities.
  • Provide input into ergonomic assessments
  • Coach and train the H&S team on carrying out effective incident investigations and act as a SME for the incident investigation methodology.
  • Adopting the principles of continuous improvement in establishing and maintaining a strong safety culture
  • Work directly with senior operations directors, district managers and unit managers to implement and maintain health and safety operating procedures
  • Review JHA’s prepared and ensure that the JHA process is carried out at each location within the region.
  • Ensure proper H&S record keeping is carried out within the region.
  • Support the external Environment, Health and Safety audit process (identify safety hazards, non-compliance, provide recommendations/programs to mitigate gaps in compliance, etc.)
  • Facilitate / Lead incident investigations, using our Medgate (Cority) program by conducting assessment and root cause analysis, identification of corrective action, ensuring desired follow-up are achieved for high potential and / or high impact incidents.
  • Work with the Dangerous Goods and Transportation Safety teams to support their activities.
  • Facilitate local safety walks, document and track close out of actions.
  • Monitor, review and report monthly health and safety performance indicators/measures
  • Ensure integration of health and safety measures into all new processes, equipment, and contract work
  • Carry out H&S inspections, audits and assessments
  • Provide technical Safety advice for the senior management of the region.
  • Attend H&S committee meetings to provide H&S advise.
  • Provide H&S coaching for senior Regional Management (up to Sr. Ops Director)

Qualification & Experience:

  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Superior organizational skills to plan, monitor and adjust to dynamic operating issues and a rapidly changing environment
  • Understanding of, and experience applying, principles of risk management and loss control
  • The successful candidate will possess a minimum of a 4 year university degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field.
  • Self-directed and self-motivated, demonstrating a high level of professionalism, ethics, confidence and a commitment to a team approach. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Preferably holder of OHS certification (preferably CRSP)
  • Have received formal training on incident investigation methodologies (preferably TapRoot®)
  • Track record of consistently delivering results
  • Willing to aggressively address problems; assume ownership of issues and provide solutions
  • Familiar with the CSA standards
  • Familiar with return to work principles
  • Ability to travel regionally to facility locations
  • Ability to work outside non-traditional hours (Evenings, weekends, holidays etc…)
  • Familiar with Ergonomic standards.
  • Be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Canada Labor Code part 2, and Provincial health and safety laws.
  • Familiar with coaching models
  • Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills
  • High analytical skills
  • Possess Health and Safety training on technical standards (Conveyor safety, Manual Material Handling, PPE, etc…)
  • Must set personal ethical standards at a high level and interact with others at equivalent levels within the organization in a manner that instills similar values
  • Holder of Auditing certification (ISO 45001, COR, ISO 9001)
  • Ability to learn new skills
  • Familiar with Behavioral Based Safety programs.
  • Must have in depth knowledge of legislative requirements to operate in Quebec.
  • Proven ability to effectively influence peers.
  • 5 to 9 years of experience in the field of Occupational Health and Safety. 2 of which in a managerial role
  • A highly effective health and safety professional with a record of demonstrated accomplishment in supporting an effective health and safety program.
  • Have managed a team of H&S professionals within a geographic area.
  • Familiar with the workers Compensation Boards requirements for the province.
