 Job Description:

Reporting to the Clinical Practice Lead, the occupational therapist provides educational, clinical, and consultative support to students to enable participation in social and academic life. The occupational therapist will work with the Student Wellness Services team and faculty and staff to support students with disabilities, illness, injury or extenuating circumstances in their efforts to attain their educational and personal objectives. The occupational therapist will assess functional limitations and work with students in individual and group contexts to decrease barriers to full participation. The occupational therapist will work closely with other service providers to ensure efficient intake and movement through the service, and to provide referrals as needed. In this integrated role, the occupational therapist supports all members of the inter-professional Student Wellness Services team.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct intake assessments of personal, environmental, and occupational factors and their impact on the student’s occupational performance.
  • Formulate goals and recommendations, and provide short-term follow-up.
  • Conduct functional assessment for students with disabilities to supplement documentation provided to Queen’s Student Accessibility Services, and provide recommendations for academic accommodations
  • Provide crisis support to students in distressand collaborate with other SWS team members regarding students at risk.
  • Provide short term rehabilitative services to students with injuries.
  • Provide individual and group-based programming related to all aspects of wellness and the development of practical strategies and skills to improve physical and mental health.
  • Provide direct occupational therapy services to students, including assessment of both physical and mental health issues, short term intervention, program planning and implementation with timely documentation
  • Provide drop-in support to students with extenuating circumstances including short term academic accommodations, and referral to other supports and services.
  • Provide consultation and direction by phone, email or in person to ensure students access the service best suited to meet their needs in a timely manner.
  • Meet with students to support them in increasing understanding of their disability, illness or injury and its impact on their well-being and participation in social and academic life.
  • Meet with students returning from medical leaves of absence to support their transition back into the academic environment.
  • Liaise with faculty and staff and Faculty / School offices regarding any accommodations students may need based on functional limitations.
  • Provide consultation and direction to campus partners to ensure a streamlined service for students.

Job Requirements:

  • Determine if referrals to internal or external services would be appropriate; facilitate these.
  • Strong skills in human service and advocacy work.
  • Excellent bio-psycho-social and health assessment skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent judgement and analytical skills and ability to respond to crisis situations in a calm and effective manner.
  • Determine short term academic accommodation needs of students with extenuating circumstances.
  • Determine functional limitation and make recommendations about academic accommodations.
  • Determine what service or person will best meet student need and advise others.
  • A solid understanding of students’ experience in post-secondary educational environments.
  • Ability to work under pressure within a changing environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals, including students, parents, faculty, staff and university administrators.
