Job Description:
The Director, Legal Services provides strategic and operational leadership to an in-house team that provides the full spectrum of legal services within an assigned component of the Legal Services Department. The position is tasked with ensuring organizational policies, procedures and programs are in compliance with legislative and regulatory legal requirements. The position is also responsible to ensure that current laws, legislation and regulations relevant to the Hospital’s business are reviewed to ensure compliance, mitigate risk and identify opportunities.
Job Responsibilities:
- Identify, address and manage legal needs in support of the relevant business units and strategic objectives. Identify areas of potential risk, determining acceptable levels of risk and making appropriate decisions in partnership with the GC ensuring leaders take appropriate measures to manage legal risk, including policy development
- Build strong strategic relationships/partnerships/networks, both internal and external, to identify opportunities, gather intelligence, help the relevant business unit achieve its strategic goals and further enhance its reputation
- Provide leadership of team members within the assigned component within Legal Services to ensure alignment with the Hospital’s overall human resources strategy while developing and building a plan within Legal Services to empower & develop team members, and to effectively implement the department’s plans and programs
- Keep abreast & monitor law and regulations, legislation, current organizational and legal philosophy, and precedent-setting cases to ensure internal organizational practices are appropriate, meet or exceed reasonable standards, and/or can be adapted to better meet the organization’s current and/or future plans
- Support and contribute to the development of the financial and operating plan for the assigned component of Legal Services and forecast associated budget needs. Track and measure legal expenditures and recommend opportunities to reduce operating costs. Oversee the retention of external legal counsel. Responsible for development, coordination and updating of relevant SickKids-wide policies
Job Requirements:
- Juris Doctorate or equivalent degree
- Ability to work under pressure with conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Minimum of 8 years of post-call experience in private practice, in house, or a combination thereof while managing staff and budget
- Experience in developing strategic recommendations/plans to address legal risk relevant to hospital setting
- A passion for practicing law with relevant subject-matter expertise in the assigned component of Legal Services
- Membership in Good Standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- Strong judgment, maturity and decision-making skills & the ability to think conceptually
- Superior time management skills with the ability to prioritize and effectively manage both planned and unexpected developments and opportunities
