Job Description:
This interdisciplinary project is jointly supervised by Prof. Steven S. Plotkin in the Departments of Physics and Astronomy and Genome Sciences and Technology, Prof. Eric Jan in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Prof. Nobu Tokuriki in the Michael Smith Laboratories and Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. We are interested in the rational development of designed vaccine immunogens and antibody therapeutics that are robust to viral evolution. We will characterize the evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, how it may circumvent the action of antibodies, and how to design therapeutics that prevent escape from neutralization. This project is part of a large, interdisciplinary collaboration of virologists, immunologists, structural and computational biologists to develop preemptive tests, vaccines, and therapies for future strains of SARS-CoV-2.
Job Responsibilities:
- The postdoctoral research fellow will be involved in high-throughput biophysical assays to test the viability of candidate molecular therapeutics, pseudotyping assays to study viral evolution, and potentially BSL-3 studies of CoV-2 infection.
- They should hold a PhD in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, physical chemistry or a related field.
- Previous experience in virology and/or immunology is desired.
- The PDF will be expected to have an enthusiastic and vigorous work ethic, and to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment as part of an active scientific research team.
- Successful applicants will be encouraged to apply for the prestigious Killam Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at UBC.
- This position is intended to be a two-year term, with renewal after one year.
- We particularly encourage qualified applications from members of underrepresented groups and minorities.
Job Requirements:
- PhD in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, physical chemistry, or a related field. A PhD within the last 3 years is preferred.
- Previous experience in virology and/or immunology, along with a strong record of publication, is also preferred.
- Salary will be fully competitive with PDF positions in virology at UBC Vancouver.
