Job Description:
This position is responsible for coordinating and administering University-wide programs focused on identification, evaluation and control of hazardous agents and processes within UBC workplaces, with the aim to protect the health of UBC members and the community at large on Vancouver Campus sites. This position works under the direction of safety advisors to facilitate compliance with regulatory requirements and conformance with best practices. The position will work with Faculties, Workplace Health Services and Facilities across UBC sites and Vancouver campuses to identify and correct unsafe conditions through environmental sampling, provision of training, worksite inspection and facilitation of effective control measures.
Job Responsibilities:
- Responsible for conducting field inspections in a variety of workplace types, including moderate to high risk assessments;
- Responsible for supporting UBC Safety, Ethics and Compliance Committees as assigned; and
- Responsible for participating in developing, implementing and maintaining program-related communications strategies including resource documents, reports and manuals;
- Responsible for upkeep of departmental safety training spaces and supplies;
- Responsible for advising on decommissioning strategies and onsite verification of laboratory clearance, providing clearance verification to project managers/contractors as needed;
- Responsible for developing course materials and providing training under the direction of safety program advisors;
- Responsible for participating in the development of departmental programs to achieve OH&S objectives, including alignment to ISO 45001:2018;
- Responsible for conducting research and analyzing trends as directed;
- Responsible to act as a resource for Transport of Dangerous Goods questions from the UBC Community;
- Responsible for care and calibration of testing instrumentation;
- Responsible for carrying out environmental testing and health protection assays based on established procedures;
Job Requirements:
- Basic project management skills
- Senior-level report writing, program planning and analytical skills
- Class 5 driver’s license
- Excellent computer skills essential (including Microsoft Office Suite, databases and website software)
- Ability to apply standards, policies and procedures to a wide variety of work situations
- Able to wear personal protective equipment such as a hard hat or respirator
- Ability to work with diverse academic, administrative and union groups with persistence and adaptability
- Assertive, self-starter, able to work under limited supervision to meet program goals; able to work independently and within collaborative groups
- Effective public speaking, presentation and training skill
Qualification & Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience, working in an area of relevant specialization.
- College diploma in a relevant discipline
