Job Description:
The Professional will maintain an overview of the various research activities and programs, assess the market potential of specific inventions, develop IP and marketing strategies for each, market to and engage in discussions with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and negotiate research agreements and term-sheets with external parties. He or she will take the lead in all aspects of revenue generation including evaluation, protection, marketing, licensing, and new company creation. In addition, the Professional will work to source seed and venture funding, from initial contact with academic inventors to successful commercialization, in collaboration with other members of UHN’s Commercialization office.
Job Responsibilities:
- Proactively pursuing relationships with potential licensing and commercialization partners
- Negotiating all aspects of research, service, licensing and other contracts
- Monitoring licensees to ensure companies are complying with financial and other major diligence in agreements
- Serving as an enthusiastic ambassador of Commercialization and the commercialization process
- Assisting inventors in identifying and assessing potential scientific research that could lead to commercialization outcomes
- Proactively initiating, developing and maintaining strong relationships with the scientific research and clinical community
- Being an ongoing point of contact for researchers for the processing of new intellectual property as well as the development of commercialization and research support agreements
- Participating with inventors in securing commercialization funds to further develop IP
- Working collaboratively as part of a team environment focused on IP stewardship to ensure successful implementation of major team initiatives
- Participating in direct marketing of UHN opportunities including pitching to targeted organizations
Job Requirements:
- Experience in the negotiation of research support, licensing and/or partnership deals is required
- Experience launching and leading start-up biotech companies (including sourcing seed and venture capital funding and divestments) would be an asset
- Industry experience and/or scientific background in the field of oncology is required
- Very good capacity for understanding and evaluating detailed legal agreements and knowledge of licensing practice required
- Self-starter with demonstrated history of taking initiatives
- Must demonstrate outstanding communication and collaboration skills, and be able to represent the values of the Commercialization team including the provision of excellent client service
- Good knowledge of patent practice required; knowledge of internet patent and other database searches would be an asset
- Experience working in pharmaceutical or biotech business development, technology transfer, venture capital or related environment preferred; excellent knowledge of biotechnology and pharmaceutical markets required
- Strong presentation skills required
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant business experience or equivalent
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize while working under pressure with tight deadlines is required
- Completion of a Master’s degree in Life Sciences or Medical Technology or equivalent experience required; PhD and/or MBA highly preferred
- Ability and comfort communicating to a range of stakeholders, from researchers to CEO’s, from a business and science perspective
