Job Description:

Builds and maintains custom and standard equipment used for research and teaching in Chemistry, using standard machining processes and design tools, working with a variety of materials. Provides consultation services to faculty, research personnel and other technical support groups regarding the design of experimental equipment, instrumentation and systems including selection and ordering for appropriate components, parts and materials.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintains and repairs research equipment such as glove boxes, freeze dryers and other equipment commonly used in organic, synthetic and inorganic chemistry labs.
  • Repairs and rebuilds grade vacuum pumps.
  • Selects appropriate materials for projects, using knowledge of common and specialty materials such as steel, aluminum, copper, specialty alloys, Teflon, Vespel, Delrin, and others as required by the nature of the research.
  • Keeps abreast of/implements safety regulations and WHMIS legislation; reports unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
  • Operates precision lathes, CNC and manual mills, surface finishing tools, woodworking tools, and forming tools. Performs soft and silver soldering, brazing, and welding.
  • Distributes cryogens to superconducting magnets owned by researchers and the department.
  • Maintains workplace and equipment in an orderly, safe, professional condition
  • Assists with relocation of scientific equipment within the department as required.
  • Assists in the evaluation and modification of equipment
  • Advises students and department personnel in the safe operation of equipment and the proper methods of maintaining vacuum equipment in good working order

Job Requirements:

  • Practical experience maintaining and repairing a variety of oil based and dry vacuum pumps, with a demonstrated understanding of common vacuum system configurations.
  • Good welding skills including MIG/TIG (stainless steel) are required. Sheet metal and basic woodworking skills are beneficial.
  • Willingness to keep current of modern techniques/equipment skills as they are developed.
  • Extensive experience operating milling machines and lathes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to provide advice to students, faculty, and staff technicians with respect to mechanical design.
  • A thorough and systematic training in all aspects of machining, common production techniques and application of materials as acquired through a recognized apprenticeship such as instrument maker (precision mechanics) or a technical college such as BCIT.
  • Minimum 5 years practical experience in a related industry or research/teaching institution.
  • Demonstrable experience with and knowledge of the design, construction, and maintenance of equipment used in chemistry research, including ultra-high vacuum chambers, high voltage electrodes, cryostats, super conducting magnets, and other equipment commonly found in Chemistry research.
