Job Description:

Mine Engineers & Planners are responsible for designing, planning, scheduling, and budgeting mine operations. They are responsible to consult with other technical staff such as geologists and metallurgical engineers to determine best mining practices and to set goals for the operations department. The MTS Team works collaboratively with peers and cross functionally with all other areas of the mine to complete tasks in their area of accountability.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Compile information and plan capital and operating requirements, scheduling, and forecasting in a rolling 24-month period.
  • Design backfill packages.
  • Lead CI projects following Vale’s Kaizen process.
  • Produce open pit mine designs using the ore body block models, decide what methods and equipment will be used for accessing and extracting ore and waste material and provide a schedule for the removal of this material.
  • Provide production drilling, blasting and development layouts to operations in a timely manner that are consistent with North Atlantic MTS standards.
  • Refine Long Range designs and add required detail to facilitate the forecasting process and allow the design team to create executable plans
  • Coordinate preparation of plans with all stakeholders including site operation, maintenance, and the Remote Services Office (RSO).
  • Analyze performance trends relative to target and make recommendations on Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives.
  • Build operations plans for stoping and development in months 0-24 with growing details as the tasks move towards month 4.
  • Guided by the 24-month rolling plan, prepare the 7+21 (4-week plan) and 3-month plans.
  • Working with the Vale’s Operational Excellence Team, establish the Key Performance Indicators for mine development and mine production. This will include establishing data gathering and data validation.
  • Collect, document, and assess engineering data within the mine to improve efficiency.
  • Ensure plan compliance through frequent field visits and observations.
  • Consult with geologists and engineers about the design, selection, and provision of machines, facilities, and systems for mining, and infrastructure such as access roads, water and power supplies.

Job Requirements:

  • Adaptability and flexibility – quickly understand the context of change and proactively adjust.
  • Be creative – promote new ways of doing things to improve the value of our mineral resources.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Power BI.
  • An undergraduate degree in Mining Engineering or Diploma in Mining Technology
  • Ability to design blast patterns, stockpiles, and dumps and provide innovative solutions to mine related problems, knowledge of engineering planning software.
  • Knowledge in open pit and underground mining.
  • Practice teamwork and collaboration within and between areas.
  • Aid operating, geological, and technologist staff in mine planning, indicating blast designs, mine schedules, and production plans.
  • Mining Engineer-in-Training (EIT) applications are also welcome.
  • Knowledge of cash flow modeling techniques and mineral economics.
  • A minimum of 3-4 years’ experience in an underground mining with a preferred focus on mine production planning and mine engineering.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) Designation in Newfoundland and Labrador.
