The successful candidate engineering students will undertake the duties required to assist the overall engineering planning, design & containment dam activities for our Mines Technical Services Department.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electrocobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution centre for finished nickel products.
  • Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.
  • The Tailings and Dams group is accountable for all geotechnical and tailings work within the Tailings Management system and this includes routine, performance and risk management of all the containment dams across Vale North Atlantic Operations.

  • Tasks include: (1) Regular site and visual inspections; (2) instrumentation monitoring and data analysis; (3) Project support of design and evaluation of containment dams; (4) Geotechnical investigation and data collection; (5) Tailings Operations, planning and deposition (6) Site specific geophysical and hydrogeology studies; (7) Dam construction QA/QC; (8) Dam and Tailings Emergency training.

Job Requirements:

  • Must be obsessed with safety and risk
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and work well with others in a team environment
  • Ensure compliance to the applicable regulations, standards and guidelines
  • Develop skills and abilities related to the provision of engineering to Ontario Operations
  • Follow Vale’s Safety Policies, Programs, and Legislative Standards
  • Maintain a high level of professional conduct
  • Organizational, interpersonal communication, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and a proven safety record are essential
  • Utilize good engineering practices while minimizing costs
  • Written and oral communication skills
  • Complete assigned projects safely and on time
  • Provide technical support to enable safe and cost-effective operations
  • Knowledge and experience in Windows based applications and Microsoft Excel is essential
  • Demonstrate open and transparent dialogue in all aspects of work
  • Monitor process parameters and communicate changes outside normal operational conditions to supervisor
